Aubrey de Grey Q&A
YOU’VE OBVIOUSLY EXPERIENCED A GREAT DEAL OF SUCCESS IN YOUR LIFE. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT, AND WHY?
I guess at this point I would say that it is that I’ve led the successfull crusade to create a genuine industry driving the charge towards the defeat of aging. “Why” is easy: the emergence of that industry has already greatly accelerated the development of therapies that will save astronomical numbers of lives.
LIKE EVERYONE ELSE, LIFE IS NOT ALWAYS SMOOTH. CAN YOU TALK ABOUT A SETBACK OR TRAGEDY YOU’VE ENCOUNTERED, HOW YOU DEALT WITH IT, AND THE IMPACT IT HAS HAD ON YOU?
Honestly I can’t. I have had an immensely privileged life in terms of setbacks – I have had basically none. Even my mother’s decline and death was far less stressful than it is for most people: for example, she never had a trace of dementia.
DO YOU SET ASIDE “ME-TIME” IN YOUR CALENDAR, AND WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME TO RELAX?
I don’t exactly set time aside – I take it spontaneously, when I feel I need it. I have certain things I do that are really efficient at recharging me – the best of all is staring at the sky from my hot tub.
WHAT’S THE MOST MAGICAL PLACE YOU’VE DISCOVERED WHERE YOU CAN GO TO CHILL OUT?
My hot tub, for sure. I can’t explain it – but it just resets me so powerfully.
DOES PHILANTHROPY PLAY A ROLE IN YOUR LIFE, TO WHAT EXTENT AND HOW?
Well yeah… I am the fulcrum of a non-profit! My official role at SENS Research Foundation is Chief Science Officer, but in reality I spend more of my time reaching out to potential donors.
WHO IS ON THE GUEST LIST FOR YOUR IDEAL DINNER PARTY, PRESENT OR PAST?
- Denham Harman
- Peter Diamandis
- Elon Musk
- Louis Pasteur
CAN YOU OFFER ANY WORDS OF WISDOM FOR OUR READERS?
Aiming high is not naive. If you think highly of yourself, that means you have the responsibility to show the world why you are right.
