Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet: Grill Mastering
High-end outdoor kitchens having all the accoutrements of indoor cooking are raising the bar on backyard grilling.
The warmer weather has finally arrived, and it’s time for barbecue. Actually, as a resident of South Florida, it’s always barbecue season!
I love my brisket and, if you haven’t already checked out our article featuring Steven Raichlen, now is the time to do so. I also enjoy just about anything else you can cook on the barbecue.
One of my favorite companies is Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet, which makes custom outdoor kitchens that are downright gorgeous, and can liven up anyone’s backyard. Forbes calls it the the “Rolls Royce of Grills.” You can see and feel the difference that sets Kalamazoo grills apart from the rest. It’s all in the details, they take pride in their quality, craftsmanship, and performance, and ship directly from their workshop in Michigan to homes all over the world.
Kalamazoo has been in business for over 100 years, focusing on custom food and dairy processing equipment. Almost 20 years ago, Kalamazoo decided to expand operations, focusing on designing the best outdoor ovens. The result—the first Kalamazoo Hybrid Fire Grill was born, combining the convenience of a gas grill that also cooks with charcoal and wood.
Their Hybrid grills became instantly popular, and their product line continued to expand to the point where they are now the industry leader in outdoor kitchens. In addition to custom outdoor grills, Kalamazoo makes weather-tight cabinetry, a full lineup of outdoor refrigeration products, and pizza ovens!
Old World Style Pizza
Wait, did I hear outdoor pizza ovens? Yes, that caught my eye! Kalamazoo recently introduced an Artisan Fire Pizza Oven, which is designed to heat like a wood fired pizza oven, but with the modern convenience of a gas fueled flame. After pre-heating the oven, temperatures can go as high as 800 degrees!
And, your pizza oven is designed to sit right on your countertop, so there is no installation required! Of course, Kalamazoo has a number of other ideas of how best to position your new pizza oven if you wish, for instance
Flavored by Fire
Now, I’ve gotta tell you that I‘ve tried a couple pizza ovens in the past, but they were relatively inexpensive, and mediocre at best. I enjoy a good pizza but have never found a reason to make my own as the end result just doesn’t compare to the local pizzeria.
Here’s the good news and the bad news. Let’s start with the bad news — unfortunately, the Artisan Fire Pizza Oven is a bit too pricey for me, so it’s gonna be a while before I see one in my backyard, unless of course Warren Buffett suddenly becomes interested in Throomers … The good news is that the reviews are coming in, and they are pretty exciting for backyard chefs!
A couple months ago, the digital magazine, Serious Eats, had the opportunity to test the Artisan Fire Pizza Oven, and to say they were impressed would be a vast under-statement, as you could guess by its title —The $7,000 Pizza Oven You Don’t Need (But Really Wish You Had).
While this luxury item is beyond the price range of most people I know, it sounds like a great “toy” for those who can afford to buy one. In fact, the author of the article admits that he found himself cooking pizza every night for two weeks, and never tired. The oven took around 20 minutes to heat up, the pizzas took between 2 and 3 minutes to make, and according to the author, the pizzas tasted like it came from a wood-burning oven.
Check out some of the author’s favorite pizzas below. What do you think?
Thinking about my love for pizza, the consistent high quality of Kalamazoo products, and the Artisan Fire Pizza Oven, I’ve made the decision. I will be visiting some of my wealthier neighbors in the coming weeks, and with a little coaxing, I can hopefully convince one of them to add this product to their collection! And, of course, I will plan on volunteering to house-sit while they are on vacation this summer!
