Seth Goldman Q&A
YOU’VE OBVIOUSLY EXPERIENCED A GREAT DEAL OF SUCCESS IN YOUR LIFE. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT, AND WHY?
I’m most proud and thankful for my family –my wife and I have three sons that we adore. They are each different, but all compassionate, athletic and thoughtful, as well as fun and funny. They have all moved out of the house, and at various stages of pursuing their careers, but we are confident they will all end up doing meaningful and mission-driven work.
LIKE EVERYONE ELSE, LIFE IS NOT ALWAYS SMOOTH. CAN YOU TALK ABOUT A SETBACK OR TRAGEDY YOU’VE ENCOUNTERED, HOW YOU DEALT WITH IT, AND THE IMPACT IT HAS HAD ON YOU?
Our middle son has a congenital heart defect, which has required three major surgeries – these intense moments have helped us all appreciate how precious and fragile life is. Despite the operations, I had to keep driving the business forward – I learned to compartmentalize – focus on my work, get it done, and then focus on my family without letting one distract me from the other.
DO YOU SET ASIDE “ME-TIME” IN YOUR CALENDAR, AND WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME TO RELAX?
Every day I spend at least 60 minutes doing some kind of exercise. My favorite form of relaxation is competing in a game of some sort, ideally a sports competition. I love the feeling of competing, and though I hate losing, I’ve been told that I’m a good sport, win or lose.
WHAT’S THE MOST MAGICAL PLACE YOU’VE DISCOVERED WHERE YOU CAN GO TO CHILL OUT?
Anywhere I can be with my family.
DOES PHILANTHROPY PLAY A ROLE IN YOUR LIFE, TO WHAT EXTENT AND HOW?
My wife has devoted her entire career to social justice work, so we do direct a significant portion of our wealth toward charities, including ones focused on education, leveling the playing field, environmental causes and Jewish causes. I focus my work on mission-driven companies where the focus and impact is in the core business itself (Organic/Fair Trade, lower-calorie drinks, and plant-based meat), rather than in the profits.
WHO IS ON THE GUEST LIST FOR YOUR IDEAL DINNER PARTY, PRESENT OR PASSED?
My Dad and my father-in-law. They have both passed away, and I would love for them to see how our sons have blossomed.
CAN YOU OFFER ANY WORDS OF WISDOM TO YOUR FELLOW THROOMERS?
The journey is the destination. Once you’re past all the challenges and drama, you’ve passed.
