Shama Hyder Q&A
YOU’VE OBVIOUSLY EXPERIENCED A GREAT DEAL OF SUCCESS IN YOUR LIFE. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT, AND WHY?
Building Zen Media as a respected and reputable firm in the industry. It’s a very competitive industry, and we’ve managed to help pioneer and stay relevant in a quickly changing world. It means a lot to me that we have the trust of so many amazing brands (clients) and that we attract such great talent as well. Building a company like this has been no small feat…AND we are just getting started!
LIKE EVERYONE ELSE, LIFE IS NOT ALWAYS SMOOTH. CAN YOU TALK ABOUT A SETBACK OR TRAGEDY YOU’VE ENCOUNTERED, HOW YOU DEALT WITH IT, AND THE IMPACT IT HAS HAD ON YOU?
I lost my best friend to an overdose three years ago, and it was a very challenging time because I still had a company to run. I couldn’t just step back from my responsibilities. It has taught me that the old adage is very true – Be grateful for your highs and graceful in your lows, and never be scared to seek help from the right sources. You can’t force life to fast forward but you can fully embrace and appreciate each day.
DO YOU SET ASIDE “ME-TIME” IN YOUR CALENDAR, AND WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME TO RELAX?
I sneak in me-time where I can! I love playing with my dogs or relaxing with my family. It’s such a special feeling.
WHAT’S THE MOST MAGICAL PLACE YOU’VE DISCOVERED WHERE YOU CAN GO TO CHILL OUT?
No place like home!
DOES PHILANTHROPY PLAY A ROLE IN YOUR LIFE, TO WHAT EXTENT AND HOW?
Absolutely. I believe a rising tide raises all boats. I support quite a few causes, and fostering entrepreneurship is a big one for me because it empowers so many.
WHO IS ON THE GUEST LIST FOR YOUR IDEAL DINNER PARTY?
Jesus. Winston Churchill. Oprah. Shakespeare.
CAN YOU OFFER ANY WORDS OF WISDOM TO YOUR FELLOW THROOMERS?
Be a student of life. The only constant is change, and the only way to embrace and thrive is to be a student at heart.
